Lacing skates in anticipation
of their smooth gliding
over fireworks captured in the ice
Freedom from plodding boots
I can fly away and be at rest
But always moving, soaring
Gravity kicks in and it hurts
Stars and darkness clear
And my cheekbone tingles
Cautious rhythm
reminding my muscles
of their old skills
But I am flying again
Relaxing into the patterns
Trying new tricks with new caution
After such lightness, boots seem heavy
Every footstep sticking to the ground
Though my soul still skates with the stars
